Extra part:  Psychopathology (write in the first person) (24 hours)

As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, it is essential for you to have a strong background in foundational neuroscience. In order to diagnose and treat patients, you must not only understand the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders but also how medications for these disorders impact the central nervous system. These concepts of foundational neuroscience can be challenging to understand. Therefore, to encourage you to think through these concepts, develop a rationale for your thinking, and deepen your understanding by interacting with your colleagues.

Check:

According to the video:

1. Explain the video (One paragraph)

2. Explain how this information may impact the way you prescribe medications to patients (One paragraph)

3. Give a specific example of a situation or case with a patient in which the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner must be aware of the medication’s action (one paragraph)

Extra parts 1 and 2  have the same questions. However, you must answer with references and different writing, always addressing them objectively, as if you were different students. Similar responses in wording or references will not be accepted.

Extra part 1: writing and rhetoric

This chapter provides you with a deeper understanding of inclusion.  The introduction addresses the differences between leisure, recreation, and play.  Where do you think you will find yourself?  Will you be facilitating recreation activities, leisure experiences, or play experiences?  In this chapter, note the multi-dimensional “Leisure Experience” and the components that contribute to experiencing leisure.  This chapter encourages you to think about your own experiences.  Do you engage in organized recreation activities for fun and enjoyment?  Do you experience leisure in your life by participating in meaningful activities that elicit positive emotions and is free from responsibilities or obligations?  Or do you engage in spontaneous, purposeless, unorganized activities during your free time (also known as play)?  Of the three, which do you think is the hardest to facilitate?

Dattilo also describes diversity in more depth than typically considered including, “race, ethnicity, origin, gender, age, ability, and sexual orientation, as well as veteran status, prior life experiences, socio-economic background, communication styles, physical characteristics, learning styles, educational background, geographic location, work experience, and any other characteristics that make individuals distinct”  (p 37-38).  He describes the importance of recognizing the multitude of characteristics that make up a group.  All of these characteristics will be important for you to be aware of when you are facilitating groups and working with all people, including people with disabilities.  Dattilo challenges you to celebrate the individual differences of individuals instead of engaging in discriminatory acts of making individuals “earn the right to be included in their communities” (p 38).  In my town, the Parks & Recreation Dept offers: 1) organized recreation sports, 2) “special services” for individuals with disabilities under their Therapeutic Recreation Department (in my opinion they are not offering Therapeutic Recreation services and no CTRSs are on staff directing the program), and 3) “inclusive sports” which are one day sporting events where kids with disabilities can come to participate in an organized sport with community volunteers without disabilities helping to facilitate the activity.  Based on reading this chapter, do you think anything is wrong with my town’s Parks & Recreation Dept programs for individuals with disabilities?  Dattilo describes the differences in supporting participation by defining: participation, special services, and supportive services. He also defines the differences between integration and inclusion and he ends the chapter by discussing whose responsibility it is to create inclusive communities.  Please take note of all of these important topics.

1. Explain your thoughts and perspectives about the chapter (One paragraph)

2. Give one example of your clinical practice that apply to the chapter (One paragraph)

3. Explain, What do you learn about the chapter? (One paragraph)
