Interprofessional Collaboration and Communication

Effective communication amongst healthcare providers from various disciplines is essential to provide safe, cost-effective care to patients (Polansky et al., 2021).  However, when communication breaks down between healthcare disciplines, mistakes can occur that could potentially cause harm to patients and even increase hospital length of stay.  Polansky et al. (2021) mentioned a few potential barriers to collaboration and communication for the physician group: lack of understanding of everyone’s roles, poor interactions, and minimal engagement with other disciplines in the healthcare setting.

Although interprofessional collaboration and communication are essential in the clinical setting, the advanced practice nurse encounters barriers due to not being considered full partners in managing patient care (Zidek & Medland, 2020).  Moreover, healthcare workers building collaborative and respectful partnerships when taking of patients can improve comradery, thus shifting the working relationship between caregivers in a positive direction to deliver better outcomes.

YouTube Video

In the video, non-effective communication occurred when the nurse displayed frustration regarding pain orders; therefore, failing to contact the provider to give an update on the patient’s request.  When the provider called the nurse, she was rude and dismissive without allowing the nurse to explain the reason for administering Tylenol to the patient.  In the second case, the nurse was rushed and allowed a phone call to distract her; this disrupted the patient’s physical therapy session when the transporter arrived for a previously scheduled MRI appointment.

Non-effective Communication:

· Nurse frustrated with current pain management

· Failure to notify the provider regarding patient’s pain management request

· Assuming the providers did not listen and missed properly managing the patient’s pain

· Provider frustrated with nurses neglect to inform her regarding patients request

· Providers failure to change the medication order

· The nurse allowed a phone call and patient yelling to distract her

· Opportunity missed communicating with the physical therapist effectively regarding scheduled MRI

Effective Communication:

· The nurse partnered with the provider to discuss the patients desire to avoid narcotics for pain management

· Nurse and provider brainstormed pain management alternatives

· Established a time to return the call to physical therapy to communicate the best time for treatment

· Effective communication with physical therapy to prevent overlapping of care
