Assessment 3 Instructions: PICO(T) Questions and an Evidence-Based Approach

· Create a 3-5 page submission in which you develop a PICO(T) question for a specific care issue and evaluate the evidence you locate, which could help to answer the question.

Introduction

PICO(T) is an acronym that helps researchers and practitioners define aspects of a potential study or investigation.

It stands for:

· P – Patient/population/problem.

· I – Intervention.

· C – Comparison (of potential interventions, typically).

· O – Outcome(s).

· T – Time frame (if time frame is relevant).

The end goal of applying PICO(T) is to develop a question that can help guide the search for evidence (Boswell & Cannon, 2015). From this perspective, a PICO(T) question can be a valuable starting point for nurses who are starting to apply an evidence-based model or EBPs. By taking the time to precisely define the areas in which the nurse will be looking for evidence, searches become more efficient and effective. Essentially, by precisely defining the types of evidence within specific areas, the nurse will be more likely to discover relevant and useful evidence during their search. When applying the PICO(T) approach, the nurse can isolate the interventions of interest and compare to other existing interventions for the evidenced impact on the outcome of the concern.

You are encouraged to complete the Vila Health PICO(T) Process activity before you develop the plan proposal. This activity offers an opportunity to practice working through creating a PICO(T) question within the context of an issue at a Vila Health facility. These skills will be necessary to complete Assessment 3 successfully. This is for your own practice and self-assessment and demonstrates your engagement in the course.

Professional Context

As a baccalaureate-prepared nurse, you will be responsible for locating and identifying credible and scholarly resources to incorporate the best available evidence for the purposes of enhancing clinical reasoning and judgement skills. When reliable and relevant evidence-based findings are utilized, patients, health care systems, and nursing practice outcomes are positively impacted.

PICO(T) is a framework that can help you structure your definition of the issue, potential approach that you are going to use, and your predictions related to the issue. Word choice is important in the PICO(T) process because different word choices for similar concepts will lead you toward different existing evidence and research studies that would help inform the development of your initial question. When writing a PICO(T)-formatted research question, you want to focus on the impact of the intervention

Childhood Obesity

Obesity in children and adolescents is one of the major health issues that are prevalent in

the U. S today. Statistics indicate that over 19% of the young ones in the country are overweight

(Yuksel et al., 2020). The high incidence of excessive weight in the country is a worrisome trend

because it predisposes young people to chronic ailments such as diabetes and high blood pressure

and causes a decline in self-esteem. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the interventions that can

help reduce the prevalence of the condition in the populace. Research indicates that exercising

regularly is a significant intervention that helps reduce obesity in the population (Liu et al., 2019).

Therefore, an investigation will be carried out to determine the effectiveness of this process in

children using the PICOT question: In school-going children (P), how effective is engaging in a

school-based physical exercise regimen (I) compared to not using any intervention (C) in reducing

the prevalence of obesity (O) in a period of twelve months (T)?

Literature Review

Literature Search

A literature search was carried out to identify articles discussing the efficacy of exercise

programs initiated in learning institutions in reducing excessive weight in learners. The search was

conducted on databases containing scholarly articles, including MEDLINE and PubMed, to

unearth twenty articles that discussed the topic. The inclusion criteria used to identify the most

relevant criteria were that the articles must have been published within the past five years, and the

full-text information should be available. Also, the selected articles had to be peer-reviewed to

ensure their contents were reliable. A total of two articles were identified that had the information

needed to answer the research question.

Findings of the Studies

Lloyd et al. (2019) investigated the effects of programs initiated in learning institutions in

eradicating excessive body mass in young ones. The authors carried out a randomized qualitative

study incorporating over 1370 learners from 32 learning institutions. The learn

OVERALL COMMENTS

See your assessment for additional feedback.

Perla,

Thank you for submitting your 3rd assessment! You are off to a great start with your PICO(T) investigation into childhood obesity. Unfortunately, there was unaddressed criteria: Criterion 2. This section is asking that you discuss your actual sources of evidence. This is where you would introduce your articles, books, websites, etc.(sources). Then, moving into criterion 3, you go into depth with the findings from the articles. So, criterion 2 is merely “identifying” your sources. If you need some clarification, Im happy to help!! Let me know

When you resubmit, please highlight your changes in yellow so I may better see your edits! Thanks so much!!

COMMENTS:

You did a great job at defining a practice issue to be explored via a PICO(T) approach. To achieve a higher score, you need to note noted how the exploration of childhood obesity will benefit from a PICO(T) approach. Great start!

CRITERIA 2

Identify sources of evidence that could be potentially effective in answering a PICO(T) question.COMPETENCY

NON_PERFORMANCEDoes not identify sources of evidence that could be potentially effective in answering a PICO(T) question.BASICAttempts to identify sources of evidence, but does not connect them to the PICO(T) question, or the connection is unclear.PROFICIENTIdentifies sources of evidence that could potentially be effective in answering a PICO(T) question.DISTINGUISHEDIdentifies sources of evidence that could be potentially effective in answering a PICO(T) question. COMMENTS:

I noticed that you did not identify sources of evidence. What are the articles, books, or websites (sources) you found while researching related to childhood obesity and your PICOT question? What made you decide to use these particular sources to answer your PI
